LEEDS WALL JUNIOR TEAM

British Youth Climbing Series 2009

FINALS - Report

Encouraging Results in a Development Year

The Final of the British Youth Climbing Series took place at Westway Sports Centre London on Saturday 20th June 2009. It was when the 18 best climbers from each of the 12 UK regions came together to compete for the overall titles for boy and girls across 3 age groups.

With none of the Leeds Wall Junior Team members in the oldest year of their respective age groups, we had done well to fill ten of the eighteen places in the Yorkshire squad. This was however, always going to be a final to gain experience from and there were some very notable performances. All who participated did so with great enthusiasm and endeavour.

Girls 8 -10yrs

Jasmine Lowe (girls 8 -10yrs) showed determination and commitment to compete at this level. This was the first year of competitive climbing for her and she will not be eight years old until the end of this year. Jasmine is hoping to make a commitment to train with the Leeds Wall Team soon and is looking forwards to improving on her skills and next years rounds of the BYCS.

Boys 8-10yrs

Jacob Lowe can be proud of his performance as the main obstacle for him was that of reach. In particular, his efforts on the bouldering, secured him a BMC special award. Jacob is looking forward to the BYCS next year and on improving on this years excellent 13th place overall.

Ben Murphy did very well in his first final. He truly showed that he can last the pace when 8 hours after the competition started he got considerably further up his final route than many of those who finished above him in the overall standings.

Boys 11 – 13yrs

All three of the LWJT climbers in this section are of the youngest year in their age group. So they have all done especially well. With these three in friendly competition at team training on a weekly basis there are particularly a good signs for the coming years.

George Rossi had a good day and will have benefitted from the experience of competing in this final. His route score was on a par with a number of others who finished above him in the competition. Keep up the good work Luke.

Luke Murphy put in a top performance in both bouldering and routes to gain a very encouraging 19th overall out of total of 32 competitors.  Keep up the good work Luke a see what the future brings.

Davey McElwee followed up 4th place in the 8 – 10yrs section in last years final with 18th in year one of this category. This is an excellent basis for progression in Davey’s future years of competition climbing.

Girls 11 – 13yrs

Hannah Cornish came through a challenging day well. She can take away some valuable learning about what aspects of her training to develop in order to balance her skills, strength and positive attitude. This should see her develop well as a climber over the coming years.

Ellie Rymer after her performance stated, “I am very happy with my performance as I could not have done better”. All who watched would agree that Ellie put in an admirable effort, climbing to the best of her ability. Had the route setters been a little kinder in respect of technicality over reach, Ellie’s skills may have taken her even higher up the results board than her already very good 14th place.  With many of those above her a year older things look good for next year.

Boys 14 – 16yrs

Seb Smith in his first final was the second of our climbers to receive a BMC special award for his efforts. Seb bouldered and routed well, and maintained a very positive attitude throughout. Seb kept on smiling even when it looked like he was going home without his shoes.

Joe Swales set himself well for ascending the results tables in future years with his performance in the final. Of particular note was his determination not to let a nasty rope tangling incident, which left him hanging upside down by his ankle interfere with his performance. Joseph also won a BMC special award.

Nathan PhillipsIt was a good day for Nathan as he won the senior boys category. (see report on Nathan's success)
