LEEDS WALL JUNIOR TEAM CLIMBERS EXCEL IN THE 2009 REGIONAL YOUTH CLIMBING SERIES

A very strong showing by LWJT members in this years’ regional rounds of the Youth Climbing Series (YCS) has resulted in the LWJT taking half of the places in the Yorkshire and Humberside Team for the final in June. The results include taking 1st place in four of the six age groups and all the top placings in the 11 – 13 boys category.

The high quality of the competition at the last round of the series at Leeds Wall echoed that of the previous rounds at Huddersfield and York. Jasmine Lowe, relatively new to climbing showed much enthusiasm to finish in third in the youngest girls age group. Jasmine’s brother Jacob set the standard in winning the boys section of the same ages. Jacobs’s athletic and adventurous style equipped him well throughout the competition. Also in this class Ben Murphy bravely came through to finish in a well earned 3rd place.

Following on with the family theme Ben’s brother Luke produced some excellent performances to triumph in the boys 11 to 13 years group. This was a closely fought category in which the LWJT showed true strength in depth, with Davey McElwee following on from his 4th place in the national final last year to take second, and George Rossi climbing with much determination throughout taking 3rd overall.

Outstanding performances by both Ellie Rymer and Nathan Phillips saw them win all three rounds of competition to take the No.1 spots in the girls and boys aged 14 –16 classes respectively. In the process Nathan achieved a perfect score by completing all boulder problems on his first attempt and flashing all the routes.

Hannah Cornish who is relatively new to leading progressed well through the rounds and took a good 3rd place in the girls 14 – 16yrs, and Seb Smith showed fighting spirit in a close run thing to accomplish 3rd place in the boys 14 – 16 group.

It is thanks to Dave Farrell and the other volunteers that again this year’s regional YCS proved a resounding success. Also thanks to Matt Birch for the new approaches to training which seem to be paying off. Here’s wishing good luck to LWJT members and the rest of the Yorkshire and Humberside squad in the Final.

The format is three regional rounds, from which the top 3 in each age group qualify to represent their region in the final, which this year will take place at the Westway Climbing Centre in London on 20th June 2009. The competition includes both bouldering and routes with the oldest age group leading.
